Omar Henry was born in Stellenbosch on 23 January 1952.[i] In 1987, at the age of 34, Henry became the first South African cricketer of colour to be selected to play in an “unofficial” test against the rebel Australian cricket side. The tour was labelled “unofficial” due to the political position of Apartheid South Africa, and the international sporting sanctions against the country’s national sides. With his inclusion into the South African national side, Henry broke several racial barriers, which were deeply embedded into the South African society. The news of Henry being even being considered drew broad media attention. Omar Henry currently resides in Stellenbosch,[ii] and has played an influential role in the development of local cricket.
