25 December 1918
On 25 December 1918, Anwar al-Sadat was born at Tala District. al-Sadat was a graduate of the Royal Military Academy in Cairo. During the 1952 revolution which saw the end of British rule in Egypt, Sadat, who would become the third President of Egypt, joined Gamal Abdel Nasser and later served as Vice President to Nasser. Following the death of Nasser in September 1970 Sadat took over the reins of power. In 1973 Sadat led Egypt into victory against Israel during the Ramadan or Yom Kippur War. The war was a political success for Sadat, bolstering his popularity through the Arab world. In Egypt, he reversed many of his predecessor’s socialist policies and attempted to garner the support of the country's Islamists. Four years (1977) after the Yom Kippur War Sadat went to Jerusalem to offer peace to Israel and two years later he concluded a peace treaty, the Camp David Accords, with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Sadat was assassinated in 1981 by Islamic fundamentalists who opposed the peace treaty with Israel, and he was succeeded by Hosni Mubarak.
