Born Judith Seelander Menge on 10 October 1938, Judith Mason is one of the most prolific artists in South Africa. She obtained a degree in Fine Arts at the University of the Wiwatersrand in 1960. By 1964 she had her own solo show. Her distinguished style and subject matter have made her work stand out among other artist. Mythical creatures and hyenas dominate her canvasses, something the artist herself refers to as trying to make sense of the chaos around her. She has also admitted to a fascination with hyenas. Mason’s career spans over four decades. In the 70’s and 80’s she often represented South Africa in international art fairs. The political climate in the country eventually forced her to leave the country, only to return at the dawn of democracy in the early 1990’s. Mason’s work is represented in all major South African National Art Collections and museums. She occasionally gives lectures.
