The Minister of Justice, Jimmy Kruger, made an announcement to the effect that 697 were being held for various security reasons. The breakdown of the total figure stood as follows: 123 under the Internal Security Act; 217 under the Terrorism Act; thirty-four were jailed for their protection as witnesses; 323 were held for cases pending in relation to public security.
