Horatio Isaiah Budlwana (Bud) Mbelle, interpreter, insurance agent, community leader and politician, dies in Pretoria. He was widely regarded as the best court interpreter of his day and was a talented rugby and cricket player who took the lead in the local African community sports activities. He was also instrumental in the anti-pass campaign of 1919, under the banner of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which was renamed the African National Congress (ANC) in 1923.
