4 August 2000
Queen Elizabeth, British Queen Mother, celebrated her 100th birthday with thousands of people lining up in the streets of London to cheer her. The Queen Mother is the first member of the Royal Family to reach her centenary. Her popularity stemmed from her activities during World War 2, when, travelling with her husband King George VI, they visited and sympathised with their subjects. Celebrations were held all over the United Kingdom to celebrate the illustrious centenary occasion. Queen Elizabeth, the first member of the Royal family to celebrate a centenary, received sacks full of presents and cards at Clarence House, her home in London. More than 40,000 well-wishers gathered to watch the Queen Mother and her two daughters step onto the balcony of the Palace. At St Paul's Church, in Walden, Hertfordshire, where the Queen Mother was christened nearly a century ago bells were rung.
