The Ruth Prowse Art Centre was opened in The Retreat as an art and cultural centre with artist Erik Laubscher as first head. The house was formerly an outbuilding on the Roodebloem estate in Woodstock, dating from the 17th century. Instructions were given to adults and children in painting, the graphic arts, photography and ceramics.
