Tanganyika and Zanzibar unite to form the United Republic of Tanzania The East African country of Tanzania came into existence through the merger of two small countries, Tanganyika and the islands of Zanzibar. The capital city of the country is Dodoma with its largest commercial city being Dar es Salaam.  The former Zanzibar islands remain semi-autonomous and hold five of the country’s thirty administrative regions. The other 25 are found in the mainland, formerly Tanganyika. The country is a one party dominant state. The current president is Jakaya Kikwete.
