Jacobus Johannes (Jim) Fouché is born in Wepener in the OFS.

On the 6 June 1898 1989, Jacobus Johannes Fouche was born in the Orange Free State (OFS) of South Africa. Fouche was elected as the second Sstate President of South Africa from 1968-1975. Fouche was initially a farmer in the OFS Orange Free State and a staunch republican as well as member of the National Party. He first served as the Minister of Defence up until 1966 after which he served as the Minister of Agriculture and Water Affairs till 1968. Fouche was elected as the second State President in place of Dr. Eben Donges who was initially elected as President; however Donges died before he could take his Presidential seat in office. Fouche’s place as president is seen as the second longest presidency to date after Thabo Mbeki who had the longest running presidency in South Africa; Fouche was the only State President to serve his full seven year term in office.
