Maritz Barrymore was born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal). He trained as a painter from 1950-1953 at the University of Rhodes, Eastern Cape, where he obtained a BA(FA). In 1954 he gained a Higher Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Town. In 1958 he studied at the Central School of Art, London. Barrymore obtained an MA(FA) at the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg) (now University of KwaZulu-Natal-UKZN) in 1981. He taught art at various Technical Colleges and in 1963 joined the staff of the Technikon Natal, where he taught printmaking. Barrymore is best known as a printmaker who participated in numerous group exhibitions in SA and abroad and has held a number of solo exhibitions in KwaZulu-Natal. He is represented SA public and private collections. Maritz Barrymore  passed away on 8 December 1994.
