Nyiko Floyd Shivambu was born on 1 January 1983 in Malamulele, Northern Transvaal (now Limpopo). He studied at Mphambo High School in Malamulele. In 2001, he went to study at the University of Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree as well as an Honours degree in Political Studies and International Relations. In 2004, Shivambu obtained his Master’s degree with distinction in Political Studies at the same university.  In his third year of study at the university, he was elected to the Student Representative body and joined the African National Congress Youth League.

He is currently a deputy president of the  Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)  and a non-voting member at Ad Hoc Committee to amend Section 25 of the Constitution (Ad Hoc Committees) since 21 August 2019. The Section 25 of the Constitution was amended to  make expropriation of  land without compensation. Shivambu is a member of the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests (Committee) since 1 August 2019. He is also an alternate member at Constitutional Review Committee (National Assembly Committees) since 27 June 2019.

Shivambu is also a member of the Standing Committee on Finance (National Assembly Committees) and a Party Whip at National Assembly (Parliament). He is a member of the Rules of the National Assembly (National Assembly Committees) and a full member at National Assembly (Parliament) since 22nd May 2019.
