The village of Riebeek West, in the Riebeek Valley together with its sister town Riebeek East. was established in 1858 as a kerkplaats of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC). It was named in honour of the first Dutch Governor of the Cape, Jan van Riebeeck. The village was the birthplace of General J C Smuts, Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa.
