This hall was erected as one of the first phases of the University of Cape Town's Groote Schuur campus. Among the famous residents of this hall was Mark Shuttleworth, who was also the first African in space.

"The first thing that you will notice about the rooms in Smuts Hall is that they are considerably Larger than those in any other Men's Residence at UCT. Your room will become the Centre of your new Home; a Place which you can make your own ..... (A comment from one of the previous students: "Smuts is a great Res and it's right on Campus which is fun. You really don't have much to worry about." (Jan 18, 2017)
