This imposing dwelling was designed and erected in 1882 by well-known architects Robert Sellers Upton and Philip Dudgeon. A billiard room was added in 1898. The building is probably the best surviving example of a late Colonial Victorian building in Natal. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 31 July 1981.
