Situated in the Highveld of Gauteng, just outside Cullinan near Pretoria. The Zonderwater museum and the Italian Military Cemetery are alongside one another! The Prison was once the largest prisoner of war camps by the Allies! Zonderwater was set up in 1941, during World War II, specifically for Italian soldiers who were captured on Africa's Northern and Eastern fronts. At it's largest it held a total of 86 000 men at one time, in 8 seperate blocks.

Individuals like Zonderwater Museum Curator, Emilio Coccia, to whom every piece of history in the museum was personnel because, in 1970 he left Panama Italy, to work as an engineer on Cohora Bassa Dam in Mozambique. Eventually he moved down to South Africa and Zonderwater!
