National Party wins election

Date: 6 September, 1989

The National Party (NP) won the Whites-only election with an overwhelming majority. This was South Africa's last election before the advent of the democratic dispensation in 1994. The election was characterised by widespread protest action by the United Democratic Front (UDF) and its affiliates.
