18 August 1994
On 18 August 1994, the first democratically elected President of the Republic of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, delivered a speech to the joint sitting of parliament in Cape Town. The speech marked his first 100 days in office. Mandela announced that the Reconstruction and Development Programme was going to be at the centre of his government's initiatives to alleviate, poverty, disease, ignorance, and try to end conflicts in different parts of South Africa, especially, the East Rand and KwaZulu-Natal. More so, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to heal the wounds of the past and help us move on as a united and non-racial nation would be established.
