What's in the name, Wathint' abafazi, Wathint' imbokodo?
Imbokodo, the rock, Woman, the foundation of society, the mainstay of the struggle for freedom! Fighting her battle on two fronts, racism and sexism, she has not yet fully emerged, obscured within the struggle for her people’s liberation.
To find her voice, we have to uncover her history. It is in the suffering of mothers and sisters, the protesters and marchers, the detained, the banned, the despised, all punished for their stand on human rights. It is in the daring and bravery of women in South Africa who defied unjust laws, women in exile who raised the conscience of the international community and women who took up arms and became freedom fighters. It is in the triumphs of women who overcame prejudice and against all odds, achieved.
Some of the history has been captured but a great deal remains to be recorded. It lives mostly in memories and in private treasures – photographs, albums, letters, documents, magazines, newspaper clippings, trophies, medals, badges and other memorabilia. We need your help in unearthing information and building a comprehensive history of the women of South Africa.
