Magnus Malan was born in Pretoria on 30 January 1930. He was from a well-to-do family. His father was a professor of Biochemistry and later a Member of Parliament and speaker of the House of Assembly and his grandparents was the son of Avril Ire de Merindol and Elizabeth Frederika Malan.
